India: Stampede in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras District Kills At Least 120 People
A tragic stampede at a Hindu religious gathering in Hathras district, in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, claimed at least 121 lives, mostly women and children. The incident occurred as thousands gathered in hot weather, reportedly pushing towards the stage where a preacher was descending. Authorities suspect overcrowding and people rushing for water may have triggered the stampede. Around 18 others were injured. Police are investigating and will take action against those responsible for any lapses, including possible overcrowding beyond permitted limits. Video footage showed bodies being transported and laid out in vehicles.
