Russia and Iran use AI to target US election | BBC News



The United States election result will have major implications around the world, meaning many countries have an incentive to try and interfere to either support a particular candidate or simply destabilise America.

This week’s AI Decoded explores the growing threat of generative artificial intelligence in creating deepfakes, which can undermine democracies – including in the US. Deepfakes use a form of AI called deep learning to make images of fake events.

Iranian hackers distributed information about Donald Trump’s electoral campaign to people linked to the Biden campaign, according to the FBI and US intelligence agencies. There is currently no evidence that the hackers received any reply from any recipients.

The US has charged and sanctioned Russian state media executives and restricted Kremlin-linked broadcasters as it accused Moscow of a widespread campaign to interfere with the presidential election.
