The RMS Titanic was a British ocean liner, hailed as the largest and most luxurious ship of its time. Built by Harland and Wolff in Belfast for the White Star Line, the Titanic was considered “unsinkable” due to its advanced design and watertight compartments. On April 10, 1912, the Titanic set sail on its maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York City, carrying over 2,200 passengers and crew, including some of the wealthiest people of the time, alongside many emigrants seeking a new life in America.
On the night of April 14, 1912, the Titanic struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic, despite multiple iceberg warnings. The collision tore open several of the ship’s compartments, and within two and a half hours, the Titanic began to sink. Due to a shortage of lifeboats and the chaotic evacuation, only around 700 people, mostly women and children, were saved. The rest, more than 1,500 passengers and crew, tragically perished, either trapped on board or succumbing to the freezing waters.
The disaster shocked the world and led to significant changes in maritime safety regulations, including requirements for sufficient lifeboats and improved communication systems. The wreck of the Titanic was discovered in 1985 by Dr. Robert Ballard, lying over 12,000 feet beneath the ocean’s surface.
The Titanic has since become a symbol of human ambition, technological hubris, and social inequality, inspiring countless books, films, and studies, most famously James Cameron’s 1997 film Titanic. Today, the story of the Titanic continues to captivate generations as one of history’s greatest maritime tragedies.
