Amid the Lok Sabha polls, an increasing number of people have raised concerns with the Election Commission of India about transparency and trust in the election voting machines, or EVMs. But the poll body has not held any press conferences or meetings with political parties to address the apprehensions.
In this special episode of Let’s Talk About, host Abhinandan Sekhri speaks to Dr SY Quraishi, former Chief Election Commissioner of India, about the powers and limitations of the poll body and why communication is needed to ensure trust in EVMs.
Dr Quraishi gives an insight into the logistics of the elections and revisits the 2009 incident when he called for public scrutiny of EVMs to uphold the ECI’s commitment to transparency. He says that even media-shy officials must engage with the public to dispel doubts. “Political parties are significant stakeholders…Their concerns must be addressed openly.”
